Since its inception, the Center for the Study of Los Angeles (CSLA) has understood the importance of collecting, assessing, and analyzing data on the elected officeholders of Los Angeles and, to a broader extent, California. To keep in line with its mission of promoting research and education, CSLA has tracked the demographic trends and election trends over more than fifty years to establish an evidence-based form of analysis. By creating a study to empirically test and analyze the political diversity at the state and regional level, CSLA has documented the changing demographics of the top elected officeholder positions in Los Angeles County and California. These datasets are the result of the painstaking efforts to capture information on the political leaders in the last half century. The focus is on observing the basic patterns that have emerged over the years, not on what these observations mean, what explains these trends, and what impact they have on local minority policies and politics. Future reports will elaborate on these additional components.
