Joseph P. Callinan

Dr. Joseph P. Callinan was a Professor Emeritus and former Dean of Mechanical Engineering in the College of Science and Engineering (1981-90). As a Loyola University student, Dr. Callinan participated in the AFROTC, Sigma Xi Research Society, and was a member of Alpha Sigma Nu-Jesuit Honor Society. He was the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award for Loyalty (2002), and was inducted onto the College of Science and Engineering Wall of Fame in 1999. Dr. Callinan is a member of the James Foxworthy Memorial Committee. He has served as a member of the Trustee's Finance Committee (2007) and the College of Science & Engineering Campaign Committee (2004-08). He also served two terms on the Alumni Association Board (2005-08 and 1987-90).

Before beginning his teaching career, Dr. Callinan was a research engineer for Rocketdyne. His LMU career spanned over forty-five years; he served as Instructor (1958-61), Assistant Professor (1961-68), Associate Professor (1968-72), Professor (1972-2002), Dean of the College of Science & Engineering (1981-90), and Professor Emeritus (2002-present). Dr. Callinan received the Society of Automotive Engineers' Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award in 1992. Dr. Callinan was a graduate of Cantwell Sacred Heart of Mary High School (Montebello, CA). In addition to his degree from LMU, he held an MS and PhD in Engineering from UCLA. Dr. Callinan passed away on February 24, 2014 after complications from a long illness.
