Getting it Done: A Faculty Panel on Program Assessment‌

Assessment helps us to do our best work as faculty. Through it we improve our teaching, our curriculum, student advising, and more. 

In Getting it Done, a panel of three faculty who help to lead assessment in their programs will share their experiences and best advice. Following the panel, attendees will be engaged in discussion of what's working and ideas for improving assessment processes in their own programs.

The faculty panel includes:

We will look at what we learned from LMU seniors about their teamwork and leadership skills, talk about how we teach these skills and discuss ways to improve performance.

We will also share how academic departments made use of the Respect for Others and Diverse Perspectives evidence that was shared last spring semester.

Understanding and Improving Artistic and Academic Development in the Creative Disciplines

Faculty who teach in creative disciplines face some unique challenges when it comes to understanding and improving their students’ learning.‌  

In this workshop we will discuss these challenges and ways to overcome them. We will explore strategies for assessing creative processes in addition to creative artifacts and performances, and talk about how knowledge gained through conscientiously-designed measures can be used to inform positive changes to curricula.

Asking the Right Questions: Best Practices for Designing Exams

Creating an exam can be a challenging task.  Unfortunately many of us have had little to no training in how to develop fair and effective tests. ‘Asking the Right Questions’ will prepare you to purposely design test that will both accurately capture your student’s learning and help reinforce that learning.

In this workshop we will cover general design principles, the dos and don'ts of common question types (e.g., multiple choice, short answer), and how to use the results to understand achievement of student learning outcomes.

Assessment 101: The Basics

Are you new to assessment? In need of a refresher on the main ideas? If so, we’ve got just the workshop for you!

Assessment 101: The Basics will provide an overview of the process we use to understand and improve student learning, introduce key tools and resources and share ideas for keeping the process both meaningful and manageable.

‌Do students understand the ethical standards of their discipline? Do they have sufficient knowledge and skills in their major?

Five of LMU’s Undergraduate Learning Outcomes indicate learning that students should demonstrate within their major. Each year LMU programs respond to the Educational Effectiveness Inventory (EEI), which provides an understanding of achievement of these outcomes. This presentation will share what we know from aggregating EEI responses and engage the audience in considering how we might use this information to improve learning.

Are you struggling to get more people to fill out your surveys? Many factors can influence a person’s decision to participate in a survey, but with careful consideration you can develop an effective strategy for increasing responses to your survey.
In this workshop, you will learn how key decisions on survey design and administration can impact the number of responses you receive. We will also discuss why the number of responses is important and provide you with practical yet effective techniques for getting more people to participate in your survey.

Mapping & Measuring: 1 Workshop, 2 Tools for Improving Learning

Understanding both how and how well your students learn is a key step toward improving learning. In this workshop we’ll cover two tools to help you do just that:

  1. Mapping: maps help you understand the experiences that contribute to student learning in your program.
  2. Measuring: there are many ways to measure learning. We’ll review properties of good measurement techniques and provide an overview of the different types of measures.

What Do Students Think They’ve Learned? How to Design an Assessment Survey to Find Out 

Surveys can be used to collect all types of information. But how do you design a survey to collect evidence of student learning?

In this workshop, you will learn how to design an assessment survey to find out what your students think they’ve learned in your program. This workshop will also help you understand the differences between assessment surveys and other surveys, the pros and cons of conducting an assessment survey, and familiarize you with the many survey resources available on campus.

We will practice writing survey questions during the workshop. Consider bringing your program’s learning outcomes to help you start developing a survey for your own program. Survey design is more fun and effective when done with a partner or small committee, so we encourage you to bring a colleague or two with you.

This workshop will introduce you to the basic steps of designing a survey. You will also learn about ways to encourage responses, survey ethics and the Institutional Review Board, and designing your survey so that the results are easy to analyze and use.

Assessment Resource Showcase & Reception 

Did you know that LMU offers a variety of resources to support programs in their efforts to understand and improve student learning? 

The Assessment Resource Showcase and Reception highlighted the resources available to programs at any stage in the assessment cycle. Participants met the assessment staff, discovered online resources, learned about opportunities for assessment funding, and more. 

Wednesday, October 7 from 3:30 to 5:30 in the Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE), with brief presentations every half-hour. 

Assessment Poster Session

The Assessment Poster Session is part of the 3rd annual Scholarship of Teaching & Learning Showcase Week. The innovative assessment plans developed by the participants in the LMU Summer Assessment Workshop were presented. How Do You Determine What Your Students are Learning? An Overview of Types of Assessment Measures 

How will you determine if students in your program are achieving the learning outcomes? There are many different ways to measure student learning in your program. This workshop helped participants to make informed choices about the types of measures that would make sense in their program by providing an overview of different types of measures, including the pros and cons of each, and by presenting the properties of good measurement techniques.

Getting to Know Our First Year Lions: Results from the 2008 CIRP Freshman Survey 

The CIRP Freshman Survey is one of the most comprehensive surveys of first-year college students in the nation.  It provides us with a portrait of our entering class, highlighting their background, opinions, and expectations of college life.  In short, it’s a snapshot into the lives of our unique and diverse first-year lions. 

This presentation provided a summary of the 2008 CIRP Freshman Survey data.

Curriculum Mapping 101: Understanding the Path to Student Learning in Your Program

Curriculum maps are one of the simplest yet most essential tools in the process of understanding the factors that contribute to student learning in your program. This workshop helped to get participants started on their program’s curriculum map by providing a map template and approaches to completing it. Participants were also given time to begin a curriculum map for their program. 

Attendees brought their program’s learning outcomes and curriculum. Curriculum mapping is more effective (and more fun) when worked on with a partner or a small committee. For this reason more than one person was encouraged to come from each program.

This workshop will present a step-by-step guide for how to create rubrics, share ideas for enhancing student learning with rubrics, and provide tips for speedily capturing what students have learned.

Rubrics are a powerful tool that can help you understand and promote student learning while saving you time. Unleashing the Power of Rubrics will present a 5-step process for creating rubrics, share ideas for how to enhance student learning with rubrics, and provide tips for speedily and successfully capturing what your students have learned. As part of the workshop, participants will be given time to begin building a rubric. Bring along a description of an assignment so you can get started on your own rubric.

Asking the Right Questions

Creating an exam can be a challenging task. Unfortunately many of us have had little to no training in how to develop fair and effective tests. "Asking the Right Questions" will prepare you to purposely design tests that will both accurately capture your student's learning and help reinforce that learning. In this workshop we will cover general design principles, the dos and don'ts of common questions types (e.g., multiple choice, short answer), and how to use the results to understand achievement of student learning outcomes.

Focusing on LMU’s Undergraduate Learning Outcomes: Diverse Perspectives and Respect for Others

Do our students demonstrate respectful language and behavior in their interactions with others? Do they value diverse perspectives?

We will look at what we learned from asking LMU seniors to demonstrate these behaviors and values, talk about how we teach them, and discuss ways to improve performance as we focus on LMU’s Diverse Perspectives and Respect for Others Undergraduate Learning Outcomes. We will also share how academic departments made use of the Civic Knowledge & Engagement and Habit of Service evidence that was shared last spring semester.
