Theme 2 - Leadership in Graduate Education

To better prepare ethical and principled leaders in the Jesuit and Marymount traditions, LMU will strengthen and developsignature graduate and professional programs that have significant impact, contribute to critical social transformation, and are distinguished by inclusive excellence and academic rigor.

Objective 1:  Assess, redesign and enhance the leadership and governance structures for graduate and professional education to provide coordination, support, advocacy and oversight. 

Rationale: Strong leadership of graduate education will lead to stronger academic programs through advocacy, proper allocation of resources, mediation of priorities among multiple interests, and encouragement of faculty and administrators.

Actions:

  1. Establish leadership and governance structures that will provide appropriate accountability and oversight of graduate programs.
  2. Establish financial management and budget processes that are transparent and flexible.
  3. Create a cohesive branding, marketing and advertising plan to attract a diverse pool of the best and brightest students into our graduate programs.
  4. Enhance graduate student services that promote academic, personal and professional growth.

Objective 2:  Strengthen and develop graduate and professional programs that meet the changing demands of society.

RationaleStrong graduate and professional programs enhance the reputation of the university, contribute to the relationship between the university and the surrounding community, respond to the needs of society, and enhance undergraduate education.

Actions:

  1. Enhance selected graduate and professional programs based on standards established by the leadership and governance body.
  2. Create transdisciplinary signature programs across the university that meet the changing demands of society and emerging fields.
  3. Conduct formal reviews of graduate programs to determine which should continue and which should be eliminated.

Objective 3:  Create innovative programs employing alternative delivery methods that respond to the needs of 21stcentury graduate students.

Rationale:  The changing employment marketplace suggests an increase in the number of working adults seeking professional or graduate-level training.  Changing economic conditions will put pressure on students to complete their undergraduate and graduate studies in less time.  Combined with overall changes in preferred learning modes, these trends call for creative measures to increase access to graduate and professional education.

Actions:

  1. Create innovative opportunities for students to complete both an undergraduate degree and a graduate degree in five years in select areas.
  2. Explore the development of hybrid programs and satellite campuses, employing enhanced and alternative delivery methods that take advantage of the latest technology and make graduate programs accessible to more people.
  3. Pursue partnerships that enhance graduate program offerings and opportunities to prepare leaders and professional practitioners
