The Breaking the Boundaries in STEM Education conference was initiated by the Collaborative Research on Evaluating, Advancing, and Transforming Education in STEM (CREATE-STEM) group. In addition to organizing the conference and maintaining a high level of research productivity, CREATE-STEM maintains a monthly seminar series that is well attended by LMU faculty, district administrators, high school teachers, doctoral students from the school of education, and faculty members from other area universities.

Anna Bargagliotti

Anna Bargagliotti, Dept. of Mathematics at Loyola Marymount University

Anna Bargagliotti, PhD,is an Associate Professor of Mathematics and Director of the Seaver College Master of Arts in Teaching Mathematics program at LMU. Her areas of research are nonparametric statistics and mathematics and statistics education. She is an editor of the Journal for Statistics Education, is an author of the ASA Statistics Education of Teachers report, and sits on the Joint ASA/NCTM K-12 Education committee. Her scholarly work has appeared in top-tier journals such as Teachers College Record, Journal for Statistics Education, Mathematical Teaching in Middle School, Journal of Nonparametric Statistics, and the Journal for Research Effectiveness.

Dorothea Herreiner

Dorothea Herreiner, Dept. of Economics at Loyola Marymount University

Dorothea Herreiner, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Economics and Director of the Center for Teaching Excellence at Loyola Marymount University as well as LMU's Experimental Economics Laboratory. Her areas of research are justice and fairness, market organization, art markets, and various experimental economics projects. She has published in several leading economics journals such as Economics Journal, Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, or the International Journal of Game Theory. She has led many faculty course design, active learning, writing, assignment design, and other workshops and has recently focused on pedagogical aspects of higher-ed economics classes.

Jeff Phillips

Jeff Phillips, Dept. of Physics at Loyola Marymount University

Dr. Jeff Phillips is an Associate Professor of Physics at LMU. His research focuses on Physics education, including factors that correlate with conceptual learning and metacognition in problem-solving. He also has studied the impact of professional development programs and influences on teachers’ teaching. He has published in The Physics Teacher, American Journal of Physics, Journal of College Science Teaching and Physical Review Special Topics: Physics Education Research. He has been active in both the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) and the Southern California section of AAPT (SCAAPT). He sits on several committees at the national level and has held an elected office in SCAAPT continuously for the past ten years.
