Santa Monica Bay Beach User Study

Santa Monica Bay Beach User Study

This unique and comprehensive collaboration among leading beach experts in southern California will monitor and evaluate 14 of the 14 indicators (100%) from the 2021 Comprehensive Monitoring Program (CMP) at many sites in the Santa Monica Bay, including several priorities from the RFP: (2) new monitoring to support habitat assessments, (3) compilation and analysis of existing data (both public and collected by the project partners), (4) new measurements using established and standardized methods to synthesize existing information and assess biological condition, and (5) develop and test new technologies. Additionally, this project will address spatial and indicator data gaps from the CMP, contribute to temporal patterns using existing data, evaluate climate vulnerability metrics, inform future State of the Bay Reports, and engage the public.

CURes researchers will be responsible for studying human activities on Santa Monica Bay beaches, which will be analyzed alongside data collected by collaborators from The Bay Foundation (project lead), University of California—Santa Barbara, LMU’s Coastal Research Institute, USC’s Sea Grant Program, and Pepperdine University. The research is funded by the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Commission through Proposition 50 funding.
