Event Management and Design

The Event Management and Design Online Training Program will equip you with the knowledge to advance in the field if you're already working in special events, or it will prepare you to enter the profession with an understanding of the industry. You'll build a foundation that you can use to build a career in special events or start your own special event business. This online certificate program is offered in partnership with major colleges, universities, and other accredited education providers.


Upon successful completion of the Event Management and Design program, you'll:

  • Understand budgeting, pricing, and accounting as they relate to event design

Learn to create spectacular special events with the Event Management and Design Online Training Program! This program is split up into two modules: Special Event Management and Special Event Design and Decoration. Each module includes multiple units complete with interactive presentations. Corporate events, weddings, parades, festivals, and more are covered. You'll learn about the practicalities of planning events and the dazzle of designing them. From permits to pyrotechnics, this program will teach you how to design, plan, implement, and evaluate special events. Upon registering, you're given six months to complete this program.

  • Requirements

    This program can be taken on either a PC or a Mac. A high-speed Internet connection (DSL or cable) is required. Students will need a basic understanding of computers and must be comfortable navigating the Internet. E-mail capabilities are also required. Microsoft Outlook 2007 software should be installed prior to beginning this program. This program is compatible with the Windows XP and later operating systems and IE 7 and later browsers.

    ed2go will provide the following textbooks:

    • Special Events: Creating and Sustaining a New World for Celebration, 7th Edition by Dr. Joe Goldblatt, CSEP


    There are no specific prerequisites for this program. It is taught at the college level and requires the basic high-school level academic competencies. Students should have a high school degree or the equivalent, basic liberal arts knowledge, and an understanding of and interest in different cultures.

  • Instructors

    Jim C. Monroe, CMP, CSEP, has been a special events professional for over 30 years. With Jayna Monroe, CMP, his wife and business partner, and their team of designers and technicians, he decorates and manages events for corporate, community, and family celebrations. Jim attended the State University of New York at Fredonia, Fredonia, NY, and received his BA in Speech and Drama. Then he attended University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, OH for his MA. He has been a Design Director and Senior Event Manager in Dallas, Texas, and a member of the Travel, Exposition, and Meeting Management Program at Richland College. Jim is also has been a member of Bill Reed Decorations Inc. and an instructor and scenic artist. He is a Certified Meeting Professional and Certified Special Event Professional. He was awarded the Esprit Award for Best Industry Contribution of 2006, presented at ISES EventWorld, the MPI DFW Chamber of Rising Star Award, and the Outstanding Service Award from TxACOM. In addition to this, Jim was an active participant in the Texas Association of Convention Operations Managers, International Special Events Society (ISES), Meeting Professionals International (MPI), National Association of Catering Executives (NACE), Association of Event and Convention Professionals (TxACOM), and APEX Initiative, Terminology Committee, Convention Industry Council (CIC).

    1. Can I register for programs if I am an international student?

    Yes, because ed2go programs are online you never have to actually travel to the school. Most schools offer telephone or online registration.

    2. How long does it take to complete a program?

    All of our programs are self-paced and open enrollment, so you can start them when you want and finish them at your own pace. Upon registering, you're given six months to complete this program.

    3. Do I have to buy additional materials?

    You must have Microsoft Outlook 2007 software already installed on your computer before taking the program. Otherwise, all the materials you'll need are included, and their cost will be covered by your tuition. ed2go will ship all materials ground service upon enrollment.

    4. Can I get financial assistance? 

    ed2go courses are non-credit courses, so they do not qualify for federal aid. In some states, vocational rehab or workforce development boards will pay for qualified students to take our courses.

    5. What happens when I complete the program?

    Upon successful completion of the program, you will be awarded a certificate of completion.

    6. Am I guaranteed a job?

    ed2go programs will provide you with the skills you need to obtain an entry-level position in most cases. We don't provide direct job placement services, but our facilitators and career counselors will help you build your resume and are available to give advice on finding your first job. Facilitators will also be available to use as a professional reference upon completion of the program. Potential students should always do research on the job market in their area before registering.

    7. Who will be my instructor?

    Each student is paired up with a facilitator for one-on-one interaction. The facilitator will be available (via e-mail) to answer any questions you may have and to provide feedback on your performance. All of our facilitators are successful working professionals in the fields in which they teach.

    8. What software or hardware do I need in order to take online programs and what are the system requirements?

    In order to take our online programs, you must have access to a computer and the Internet. You can access the program contents from any Web-enabled computer. You don't have to use the same computer to log-in to the program every time. We recommend that you have a word-processing program (Microsoft Word is best, but any word-processing program will suffice) and the latest version of Internet Explorer.

    9. Can I use a Mac?

    Yes, you can use a Mac for this program.

    Our programs are all open enrollment. You can register and start the program as soon as you are ready.
    Please note: Once the program curriculum is accessed online or through submission of a material shipment confirmation, refunds cannot be issued.

    12. What if I don't have enough time to complete my program within the time frame provided?

    The time allotted to complete your program has been calculated based on the number of hours for each program, so don't worry too much about not completing in time. If, after a concerted effort, you are still unable to complete, your Student Advisor will help you work out a suitable completion date. Please note that a fee will be charged for an extension.
