To ensure that all LMU students have an opportunity to learn about intellectual virtues (e.g. what they are and why they're important to a good education and to living a meaningful and ethically responsible life) and that many are also given frequent and well-supported opportunities to practice and cultivate the virtues of curiosity, intellectual, humility, open-mindedness, intellectual courage, and intellectual perseverance.
To provide any interested LMU faculty and staff with multiple and varied opportunities and incentives to learn about and explore intellectual virtues, their educational and broader ethical importance, their Ignatian resonances, and how they can be formed in an educational setting.
To facilitate a deeper and more explicit institutional concern with and commitment to educating for intellectual virtues at LMU, consonant with and informed by LMU's Jesuit mission and vision.
To support, learn from, and develop resources for faculty and administrators at other institutions who are interested in integrating a focus on intellectual virtues into their curricula and programming.
Outcomes
A majority of LMU undergraduates will develop an awareness of intellectual virtues and their importance to learning well and to living a meaningful and ethically responsible life.
At least 35% of LMU undergraduates (or 2500 students) will develop an understanding and appreciation of intellectual virtues, reflect on their own intellectual character strengths and limitations, be given frequent and well-supported opportunities to practice intellectual virtues, and receive meaningful feedback concerning this practice.
At least 15% of LMU faculty (or 100 faculty) will receive formal training in intellectual virtues pedagogy, make significant efforts to implement this pedagogy, and feel well supported in these efforts.
The language and concepts of intellectual virtue will be more deeply integrated into the institutional identity and culture at LMU. University leadership will see training in the "Virtues of the Lion Mind" as an important part of an LMU education.
LMU will be at the forefront of efforts to educate for intellectual virtues at the collegiate level. We will provide valuable opportunities and resources for other institutions interested in learning about or undertaking similar activities.
