Rebecca Hong, Ed.D.

Senior Director of Educational Effectiveness and Assessment

Rebecca joined Loyola Marymount University as the Senior Director of Educational Effectiveness and Assessment in January of 2019. In her role, she oversees the Office of Assessment and serves as the university’s Accreditation Liaison Officer (ALO) for WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC), the regional higher education accrediting body.

Rebecca is a frequent conference presenter at regional and national assessment conferences and can often be found leading conversations on topics such as engaging students in assessment and assessment as a social justice practice. One of her recent publications can be found in a special issue on Assessment and Social Justice: Pushing Through Paradox in the peer-reviewed journal New Directions for Institutional Research.

Prior to joining LMU, Rebecca served in the roles of Assistant Provost for Educational Effectiveness, Dean of Curriculum and Assessment, and Associate Professor of Education at Biola University. During her time there, she curated a curriculum and led a Faculty Assessment Fellows program that embraced best practices for faculty learning communities, grounded in skills as an assessment scholar-practitioner. Rebecca also incubated and launched a Student Assessment Scholars (SAS) program that trained and elevated undergraduate and graduate students to be change-makers in their university. The SAS program has since been replicated and launched on other university campuses.

Rebecca earned her Ed.D. in Educational Leadership, with a focus in Higher Education Administration, from the University of Southern California and a B.A. in Economics from UC San Diego. She is also a proud graduate of the sixth cohort of the WSCUC Assessment Leadership Academy and currently serves as a mentor for the program. She regularly serves as a WSCUC accreditation evaluator, frequently as the assistant chair.

Chris Schmader, Ph.D.

Chris Schmader completed his undergraduate degree in English at Davidson College and holds a Ph.D. in cognitive psychology from Northwestern University, where he studied how social context affects the negotiation of meaning in conversation. He also worked as an assessment researcher at Northwestern, collaborating with faculty and administrators to assess the impacts of summer academic programs on student achievement.

As a Research Associate in the Office of Assessment at Loyola Marymount, Chris consults with faculty on program- and course-level learning assessments, and he helps conduct university-wide assessments of Loyola Marymount's Undergraduate Learning Outcomes. He also administers the Educational Effectiveness Inventory (EEI), an annual survey of academic programs' assessment activities at LMU.
