Dear Colleagues,
LMU is one of 17 institutions currently participating in the American Council on Education’s (ACE) 17th Internationalization Laboratory cohort. The Internationalization Lab provides customized guidance and insight to help colleges and universities achieve their internationalization goals. Since 2002, more than 150 institutions have participated in the program.
LMU’s participation in the ACE Lab will advance our internationalization goals by developing an international strategic and tactical plan to strengthen our visibility as a globally influential university and prepare our graduates to create the world in which they want to live.
In his convocation address this year, President Snyder asked, “How can we best prepare our students to reason rigorously, imagine richly, and choose discerningly?” I cannot think of a better way than by actively engaging with comprehensive internationalization to enhance global learning experiences for our faculty, staff, and students at LMU.
Consequently, over the next year, a steering committee composed of outstanding faculty and administrators from across the university will work closely with an ACE internationalization adviser to assemble a leadership team, analyze current internationalization activities, and articulate institutional goals. They will lead a coordinated process to align and integrate policies, programs, and initiatives to position LMU as more globally oriented and internationally connected.
An open call will be made soon, and I hope you will share your insights and expertise in any of five working groups that will address the following target areas:
- Articulated Institutional Commitment, Structure, and Staffing;
- Curriculum, Co-Curriculum, and Student Learning Outcomes;
- Faculty/Staff Development, Policies, and Procedures;
- Education Abroad;
- Collaborations and Partnerships.
I am confident that with your support, our ACE Lab internationalization leadership team will successfully develop a comprehensive plan to provide our students, faculty, and staff with more robust, globally imaginative opportunities for and with others, and that we will further accelerate LMU’s momentum as an institution with global impact.
Sincerely,
Thomas Poon
Executive Vice President and Provost
