About MAJS

Mission Statement

Media, Arts & a Just Society (MAJS) at Loyola Marymount University is a collaborative initiative that brings together our students, faculty, and the larger community to learn directly from and work alongside great thought leaders, fostering new and diverse voices of globally-minded leaders committed to the practice of media and art as a nexus for civic discourse and democracy. We cultivate media literate global citizens who are actively invested in their communities as critically-engaged and creative media practitioners.

Our student-centered vision is designed specifically to empower the next generation to shift the media landscape toward equitable production practices and the encouragement of justice on screen and on the page.

Our Action Plan

We Critique: Media Literacy in Service of an Informed Public

Through engaged conversation, we hone our skills of examining all forms of media. These works have the ability to disempower and marginalize people or to humanize and connect us. With an eye towards equity and accessibility, we explore and co-investigate.

We Create: Critical Media Production and Arts in Service of Justice

At MAJS, we understand media production as a practice that performs a critical service to democracy. We provide the tools and foundations for students to reframe the social imaginary in service to justice. We are platform-agnostic, using innovative technologies to craft accessible and impactful media content that reflect and engage a global citizenry.

We Connect: Collaboration in Service to a Global Community

Connection is at the core of every activity here. In the research space, our faculty fellows connect theory to practice in their original scholarship and creative projects. In the teaching space, we forge collaborative connections with media partners to amplify student innovations and to facilitate student career pathway exploration. In the programming space, MAJS events and projects engage pressing global issues by connecting community members, journalists, policy makers, entertainment industry leaders, and scholars in conversation and action.
