The Marymount Institute supports the fine and performing arts – as expressions of our humanity, ways of making meaning in the world, and creative responses to, as the RSHM say, “the needs of our time.” In a society that stresses "busyness," the musical events at the Marymount Institute offer us a respite from the world – with its multiple political, social, and environmental crises – and an opportunity to appreciate beauty and to find rejuvenation.

Community Workshops for Balinese Gamelan
With Prof. Paul Humphreys (emeritus) and Prof. Divine Gbagbo, Department of Music, College of Communication and Fine Arts
The Marymount Institute invites faculty, staff, and students to experience Balinese gamelan, first-hand. With instruments created in the workshop of a master instrument maker in the Gianyar region of Bali and currently on loan to the Institute from the Department of Music, these sessions are open to all members of the LMU community.
Gamelan-playing is an integral aspect of community life throughout Bali. Participation is a process through which details of rhythm, melody and form are “brought into the heart.” Inspired by this process, as well as by the beauty of the music and the instruments themselves, this evolving tradition flourishes today in schools and communities both inside and outside of Bali. LMU is fortunate to be among these.
Please join us in the celebration of music-as-community that is Balinese gamelan. All are welcome. Please RSVP here.
In spring 2026, Balinese gamelan workshops will take place on the following Tuesdays at 1:45 – 3:15pm: January 13th, February 3rd, March 10th, April 14th.
