First-time, first-year students entering the University during the 2025-26 Bulletin year are required to fulfill the Experiential Learning for Mission Flag requirement.* In keeping with LMU’s mission and identity, courses with the Experiential Learning for Mission designation (ELM) offer immersive or community-based learning opportunities that integrate academic knowledge, application of that knowledge, and the values of LMU’s mission.
Experiential Learning for Mission Outcomes
Students who complete courses with the ELM designation will...
- Apply informal and formal ways of knowing by demonstrating awareness of one’s own and at least one other worldview from the community/context that the learning experience engages.
- Collaborate with members of the community/context in respectful and reciprocal ways.
- Evaluate the problem presented using skills and frameworks developed in course content.
- Respond ethically to pressing issues in contemporary society that affect human and/or ecological well-being.
- Reflect on the importance of engaged citizenship in personal, professional, and civic activities in service of caring for the collective welfare of communities.
*Engaged Learning
Students who entered the University during a prior academic year or as a transfer student should consult their department, college, or advisor. They may fulfill their Flag requirement with an Engaged Learning course, which integrates classroom studies with experience beyond the classroom, challenging students to use their experiences to think more critically and deeply about what they are studying.
