The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a Federal law that protects the privacy of student education records (Title 34 Code of Federal Regulations Part 99).
The law states that a school cannot disclose student records to a third party without students’ written consent, but its faculty and staff may use the records for legitimate educational purposes, such as assessment (34 CFR § 99.31).
Faculty and staff engaged in assessment at LMU take their right to use student records seriously, and consistently follow best practice procedures for working with confidential information.
