If you received a letter of invitation via email on behalf of Timothy Law Snyder, President of Loyola Marymount University, you are invited to apply for membership in Alpha Sigma Nu, the Honor Society of Jesuit Institutions of Higher Education. Our chapter seeks to identify the most accomplished LMU students demonstrating through their scholarship, loyalty, and service an intelligent appreciation of and outstanding commitment to Jesuit ideals. Induction into Alpha Sigma Nu is one of the highest student honors awarded on Jesuit campuses throughout the world.
To be eligible for induction into the LMU chapter of Alpha Sigma Nu, students must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at Loyola Marymount University or Loyola Law School at the time of their induction. The Chapter may nominate in a single academic year (a) not more than four percent of the full-time enrollment of the junior class, plus (b) not more than four percent of the full-time enrollment of the senior class, plus (c) not more than four percent of the total enrollment of a graduate degree program or department. Students nominated for membership in the Society must have scholastic rank in the top fifteen (15%) percent of their undergraduate class or of the total enrollment of their graduate program or department. Undergraduate transfer students shall have completed not less than one and one-half semesters at a Jesuit institution by the time of their nomination. Part-time undergraduate students shall have completed not less than one-half of their degree program by the time of their nomination. Graduate students must have completed not less than one-half of the credit hour requirements for their program at a Jesuit institution at the time of their nomination.
Satisfaction of the minimum scholarly requirements detailed above is not by itself sufficient for induction into Alpha Sigma Nu. In all cases students must have distinguished themselves in displaying qualities of loyalty and service as defined in the Alpha Sigma Nu by-laws. All applications are evaluated by the Student Chapter and the Faculty Advisor who submit a list of recommended nominees to the Dean of each college or school (in the case of undergraduate nominees) and to the Dean or Chairperson of the relevant college, school, or department (in the case of graduate nominees) for consideration. The dean may delete any name from the list if s/he believes that the candidate is not qualified for membership. The President of the University must approve the final list of nominees and, upon the President’s approval, the nominees shall be deemed candidates for induction into the Society.
