Reading Group: “The Catholic University and Minority Experience”
Fall 2017
|
ACTI is pleased to offer an opportunity for a reading group experience for the Fall 2017 semester for faculty and staff. Theological Studies Professors Kim Harris and Allan Figueroa Deck, SJ, propose to take a deeper look into the issue of racism. Racism in the context of growing diversity in the United States together with reactions to Donald Trump’s election and heightened racial tensions continue to be subjects of growing interest and concern, particularly in light of recent domestic and international events. Professors Harris and Deck propose to facilitate a dialogue about racism from the unique perspectives of the Catholic and Jesuit traditions using Fordham University African American theologian Bryan Massingale’s Racism and the Catholic Church as the basic text. A second perspective will be provided by three readings from U.S. Latino/a theologians. A third perspective will come from a reading that captures the criticism of some people against higher education today regarding claims of racism, political correctness, and the alleged suppression of free speech in university contexts today.
