HHMI × LMU

Loyola Marymount University was selected in 2022 as one of six institutions to receive a prestigious Driving Change grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. The grant will provide $2.5 million over five years. The funds are being used to provide full-time Seaver College of Science and Engineering faculty with knowledge around inclusive pedagogies, equitable assessment, asset-based approaches to curating accessible learning environments, and support for their development as equity-minded practitioners.  The funds are also being used to support the professional development of STEM students to prepare them to engage with the LMU mission across a diverse range of communities and contexts, to collaborate in developing solutions for global applications, and to lead at LMU and beyond from a mindset that honors inclusion as the pathway toward STEM excellence.

Driving Change

The Driving Change program aims to affect lasting culture change on research university campuses by creating a more inclusive learning environment for all. Its goal is to support undergraduate students, including people who have historically been excluded from science because of their background, so that they may excel in STEM and assume leadership roles in the field.

This initiative encourages a comprehensive approach to culture change with three interlocking elements:

    • The Driving Change Learning Community, which brings together 38 institutions.
    • Institution-centered programming that will significantly increase the inclusivity of the university’s STEM learning environment.
    • Student-centered programs that enable all students to succeed, universities to commit to and value that success, and faculty to assume responsibility for the success of all students.
