Mission and Core Values

As the continuing education department of Loyola Marymount University, LMU Extension offers professional certificate programs, community education, and customized learning opportunities that further the academic and professional goals of adult learners and non-traditional students. Drawing upon the University’s academic, research, and active engagement principles, LMU Extension is dedicated to empowering communities and helping students realize their potential and improve their quality of life.

We are committed to increasing educational impact for adult learners and non-traditional students through education, training, and workforce development programs at the community level. Our programs are responsive to the social, economic, and educational needs of our society. We believe community engagement is critical for achieving transformational change, sustainable outcomes, and building equitable communities.

Rooted in traditions and the LMU Mission, LMU Extension is committed to the following core values that guide us in carrying out our vision.

  • Community Engagement - We make a difference locally through focused engagement with state and local community partners.
  • Continuous Learning - We recognize transformational change requires continuous learning characterized by embracing different perspectives and the courage to explore.
  • Diversity, Equity, and inclusion - Our work is guided by LMU’s vision of inclusive excellence which aims to ensure students from all backgrounds succeed in reaching their goals and improving their families and communities, eliminating achievement gaps and systemic oppression.
  • Service - Rooted in traditions devoted to service and the promotion of justice, we stand with disadvantaged and marginalized groups and take an active role in making impacts among our students, staff/faculty, and the community.
  • Innovation - We maximize opportunities for our students by developing career education and workforce development programs that facilitate career mobility, provide skills and competencies that are in demand, promote reskilling and upskilling to close skills gaps, and provide the opportunity for students to engage and thrive in today’s changing global society.
