Service and Emotional Support Animals
LMU is committed to being in compliance with state and federal laws regarding individuals with disabilities. The following guidelines explain the rules and expectations for having a Service or Emotional Support Animal on campus.
Service Animals
Service animals, which are generally limited to dogs, are defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and have special training to provide services or tasks for individuals with disabilities. They are allowed to accompany the individual with a disability in public places as well as places of residence. To learn more, please read the Guidelines Regarding Service Animals for Students with Disabilities.
Emotional Support Animals (ESAs)
Emotional support animals (ESAs), which are defined under the Fair Housing Act (FHA), provide necessary companionship and comfort to individuals with disabilities, who have established the need for such an animal in their residence. ESAs are not required to have special training for work or tasks. The regulations permitting ESAs pertain only to places of residence. To learn more, please read the Guidelines Regarding Emotional Support Animals for Students with Disabilities.
Please contact the DSS Office by phone or email to discuss the process for requesting accommodations in further detail.
