When Can I Study Abroad?
At LMU, immersive and defining study abroad experiences are achievable for every student. Whether targeting a semester, summer, or short-term program, most LMU students participate in at least one global experience during their undergraduate career.
As a first-year student, you can study abroad as early as the summer after your first year at LMU. Students usually study abroad in their sophomore and/or junior year, and depending on their academic plan, students can study more than one semester or summer abroad. You can choose from over 100 programs!
Where Can I Study Abroad?
Typically, applications are open the semester before you plan to go abroad. You can plan ahead to maximize your study abroad options!

How Much Does It Cost?
Studying abroad through LMU is an affordable opportunity. For most LMU students, the cost of study abroad is similar to the cost of living on campus for a semester. Financial aid can be applied to the majority of semester LMU Study Abroad programs and additional scholarships are available.You can find the cost of each program by accessing the LMU Study Abroad online program brochure, and clicking on the “Tuition & Fees” tab.
LMU’s Financial Aid Office is an excellent resource for learning more about how loans, grants, and scholarships work for study abroad. The Financial Aid Office is located in VDA Building –Suite #270. Students may contact the Financial Aid office using their email messaging system or by phone at 310-338-2753.

Note about Academics
All LMU Study Abroad program options offer students’ credit that works for their degree and moves them closer to graduation. At LMU, there are programs available that fit within each student’s degree plan and often times align closely with major or minor requirements. You should plan to take LMU core, major or minor courses, and/or electives abroad.Academic Advisor
You should meet with your Academic Advisor early on to discuss which required courses in your major can only be taken on campus at LMU, and which requirements you may be able to accomplish through coursework abroad. At LMU, there are programs available that fit within each student’s degree plan and often times align closely with major or minor requirements.As a transfer student, it is very important to choose a program that aligns with your academic plan and interests. You might want to take a combination of major classes, electives, and LMU core (if offered) while you are abroad.

LMU Programs

All programs offer LMU credit courses which allows you to continue to build your GPA at LMU while abroad, and avoid earning more transfer credit.LMU Semester Programs:

Transfer Credit
Most of the programs offered by LMU Study Abroad provide transfer credit. As part of the study abroad application, students submit a Transfer Course Review form to the Office of the Registrar in order to understand how the classes will transfer to LMU.Transfer students should take into consideration the Transfer Credit policy outlined in the LMU Bulletin that states students cannot exceed the 60-semester hour maximum allowed for undergraduate course work from community colleges, or exceed the 90-semester hour maximum allowed for undergraduate course work from four-year institutions. Talk to your academic advisor to understand your unique situation.
Senior Residence Requirement
The LMU Bulleting states that at least 30 of the last 36 semester hours for the bachelor's degree must be taken in residence at LMU. Students can fulfill this requirement by participating in any semester and summer program offered by LMU Study Abroad.Academic Advisor

As a transfer student, understanding the classes that you must take at LMU, and the classes you might be able to take abroad will help you decide the program that is best for you.
