Name: Courtney Spears

Major: Health and Human Sciences

Graduation Year: 2020

Fellowship Award: The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship is a grant administered by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State. The program is dedicated to alleviating financial constrictions that may prevent students from participating in study abroad programs.

What are your future career plans? Upon graduation from LMU, I plan on going to graduate school and pursuing a degree in Public Health or Health Policy & Management. After receiving my degree, I plan on working for an agency of the Department of Health and Human Services.

What inspired you to apply for this award? The scholarship was brought to my attention by the Study Abroad office, here at LMU. I was inspired by the mission of the program to help students develop critical skills for academic and career development through studying abroad.

What was the most challenging part of the application process? Time management. Gilman is a long application process with a lot of required materials and essays.

What advice do you have for future applicants? Start early and always have someone else review your essays!

What would people be surprised to know about you? Study abroad will be my first trip to Europe!
