Rachel Meilak '23

Name: Rachel Meilak

Pronouns: She/her/hers

Major: Mathematics

Minor: German and Women's and Gender Studies

Graduation Date: May 2023

Fellowship Award: I am currently serving as the Data Analysis Fellow at Anatolia College in Thessaloniki, Greece. In this role, I work closely with the Institutional Budget Coordinator and the CFO to provide quantitative and qualitative financial and data analysis using a variety of software packages such as LogismosMIS, Jaspersoft, and Athena.

What are your current or future career plans? Following this program, I plan to attend graduate school to gain my Masters in Education and Single Subject Teaching Credential with the hopes of becoming a high school math teacher.

What did you enjoy most about the program? Although I have enjoyed experiencing a more traditional job environment, as well as learning more about the financial aspects of an educational institution, my favorite part of the program has been immersing myself in Greek culture. As a fellow, I am able to take one free class at the American College of Thessaloniki per semester, and I was able to take a Greek language class that has helped me better communicate and connect with my local community.

What was the most challenging aspect of the program? The most challenging aspect of the program has been being away from my friends and family, especially navigating the time difference. However, I have been able to work out schedules to call my loved ones, and the community at Anatolia is starting to become a second family, which has made the transition easier.

What advice do you have for future applicants? Reach out to friends, family, and mentors (like the amazing staff at ONIF)! Applying for fellowships can be a difficult and time-consuming process, but having a support system will make it so much easier. It is also helpful to have people to turn to when making the final decision, especially if you are applying to multiple different programs.

What would people be surprised to know about your experience? Before this experience, I had never studied abroad or even been to Greece. I truly love it, though, and I hope to be able to work abroad again someday, whether in Greece or elsewhere.
